MetaTrader 5 showing a No Connection issue

MT5 No Connection: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

MT5 showing No Connection is usually less serious than it looks.

The platform simply cannot reach the trading server. That may be because your internet dropped, MT5 is using the wrong server, or something on the network is getting in the way.

The main thing is not to start changing random settings. Work out where the connection is breaking first.

What Does No Connection Mean on MT5?

When MT5 is connected, prices keep updating and your account stays synced with the broker server.

When that link drops, the platform may show No Connection in the lower-right corner. Charts can stop moving and Market Watch prices may stay frozen.

You also will not be able to send a new trade while the connection is down.

This is different from Invalid Account.

Invalid Account usually means MT5 reached a server, but the login was rejected. No Connection normally means it could not maintain that server link in the first place.

Start With the Connection Itself

Before touching MT5 settings, check your internet.

A weak connection can be enough to disconnect the platform. Your browser might still open websites, which makes this easy to miss.

Try another site, then watch whether pages load normally. If the connection looks unstable, restart the router.

A phone hotspot is also a useful test.

Connect the computer to your hotspot and open MT5 again. If it suddenly works, there is probably nothing wrong with your account or platform.

The issue is more likely your Wi-Fi or internet provider.

This matters when trading from hotels, offices, airports, or shared networks. Some networks restrict traffic even though normal browsing still works.

Check the MT5 Server

The wrong server is another common cause.

Brokers can have separate servers for demo accounts, live accounts, account groups, or different regions.

Open:

File → Login to Trade Account

Then look at the server field.

The name should match the server assigned to your account. A server with a similar name is not necessarily the same one.

For a Dominion Markets account, use the exact server shown in your account details.

If you recently opened another account, do not assume it uses the same server as the old one.

Restart MT5 and Rescan the Servers

Sometimes MT5 simply loses the connection and does not recover cleanly.

Close the platform fully and open it again.

If prices start moving, that was probably all it needed.

If the problem stays, click the connection area in the lower-right corner. Depending on your MT5 setup, you may see an option to rescan the available servers.

Run the scan and let MT5 test them again.

This is worth trying when the server list has become stale or the platform is trying an old route.

Your VPN Can Be the Problem

Using a VPN does not automatically stop MT5 from working.

A bad VPN server can, though.

Some VPN locations have poor routing, high delay, or network rules that interfere with the trading server.

Turn the VPN off and reconnect.

If MT5 works straight away, switch to another VPN location or leave it off while trading.

Proxy settings can cause the same issue.

You can check them under:

Tools → Options → Server

If you never set up a proxy, there is usually no reason for one to be active.

Check the Firewall if MT5 Still Will Not Connect

Windows Firewall or antivirus software can block MT5 from accessing the network.

This sometimes shows up after an update or fresh installation.

On Windows, look for terminal64.exe in the firewall rules.

Make sure it is allowed to connect.

Do the same in your antivirus software if it includes its own firewall.

There is no need to disable all your security tools. Allowing MT5 itself is the safer fix.

Try Another Network Before Reinstalling Anything

This test can save a lot of time.

If MT5 refuses to connect on your home Wi-Fi, switch to mobile data.

If it works there, reinstalling MT5 will probably achieve nothing.

You have already proved the platform, account, and broker server can connect. The problem sits somewhere on the original network.

The same idea works the other way around. If several networks fail, then it makes sense to check MT5, the server, or the account more closely. If the platform files are damaged or outdated, you may need to download and install MetaTrader 5 again.

Look at the Journal

The Journal gives you more information than the No Connection message alone.

Open the Toolbox and choose the Journal tab.

Look at the newest entries.

If MT5 keeps reporting connection failures, focus on the network or server.

If the log shows an authorization problem instead, go back to your login number, password, and server.

This distinction matters.

A trader can spend twenty minutes restarting routers when the real problem is a bad login.

What About MT5 No Connection on Mobile?

The same checks work on Android and iPhone.

Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data first. That quickly tells you whether the current network is involved.

Then check the broker and server saved in the app.

If the details look wrong, remove the account and add it again using the correct server.

Searching for the broker again can also help when an old server entry is still saved.

Mobile users can check the full MetaTrader 5 Mobile guide for app setup and account access.

MT5 No Connection and Invalid Account Are Not the Same

This is worth repeating because the fixes are different.

No Connection usually means MT5 cannot communicate with the trading server.

Invalid Account means the platform normally reached a server, but your account could not log in.

That can happen because of a wrong password, wrong server, expired demo account, or disabled account.

Using an MT4 login inside MT5 can also cause trouble.

Having no money in the account is not normally the reason. An empty account can still log in.

Should You Reinstall MetaTrader 5?

Only after the basic checks fail.

A reinstall will not fix bad Wi-Fi, the wrong server, or a blocked network.

If you reach this point, save your custom indicators, templates, and Expert Advisors first.

Then install a fresh copy of MT5 and log in again.

When to Contact Dominion Markets

While trading on Dominion Markets and benefiting from raw spreads and tight pips, if MT5 still shows No Connection after testing another network and checking the server, contact Dominion Markets support.

Send them your account number, server name, device type, and a screenshot of the error.

Journal messages can also help them see what failed.

Never send your trading password.

In most cases, an MT5 No Connection error comes down to the network, the chosen server, or local settings on the device. Check those first before making bigger changes.
